How learning works
Mission.
Interaction.
Mastery.
The same loop runs through every MAUKQ simulation, every subject, every grade. Four steps that turn passive curriculum coverage into demonstrated capability.
Enter a mission
Every simulation opens with a real-world scenario. You are the operator, the chemist, the engineer. There is a system to control and a problem to solve. No abstract definitions — just a job.
Built from real South African projects: hydroelectric dams, mining circuits, wind farms, water treatment plants.
Manipulate the model
Adjust sliders, drag components, change variables. The simulation responds instantly. There is no submit button. What you do has consequences in real time.
Underlying physics, chemistry, and engineering equations run live in the browser — same models that engineers use.
See the system fail or work
Push the bridge until it buckles. Mix the wrong reagents and watch the reaction stall. Tilt the wind turbine off-axis. Real consequence is the teacher.
Every simulation has a clear failure mode. You learn what works by seeing what does not.
Earn mastery
Complete the mission, earn XP, unlock deeper challenges. Sessions stack into a profile of demonstrated capability — not seat time.
Progress maps directly to CAPS standards. What you do here counts for what your teacher reports.
Pedagogical principles
Why we built it this way.
Active over passive
Reading about Bernoulli is not understanding Bernoulli. Watching a video about gold cyanidation is not understanding gold cyanidation. You only know a system when you have run it.
↳ An analysis of 200+ studies (PNAS, 2014) shows learning by doing produces 2–6× the gains of lectures.
Real over abstract
Most science software shows toy systems: a frictionless ramp, an idealised gas. MAUKQ shows the actual plant, the actual circuit, the actual project. Real numbers. Real failure modes.
↳ Built in collaboration with practising engineers from Jones & Wagener, Anglo American, Eskom.
Curriculum as map, not cage
CAPS is the topology of what learners must cover. MAUKQ uses it as a map — every simulation tells the teacher exactly which standards a session covered, and tells the learner why it matters next year.
↳ Mapped to 100% of CAPS Natural Sciences and Technology Gr 7–9.
Mastery over completion
Finishing a worksheet is not the same as understanding. We measure outcomes by whether the learner can replicate the system behaviour, not whether they ticked all the boxes.
↳ XP, mastery levels, and unlock gates inspired by Brilliant, Khan Academy, and Duolingo.
