Curriculum alignment
Built for every curriculum
taught in South Africa.
CAPS in public schools. IEB in independent schools. Cambridge IGCSE and A-Levels in international and online schools. IB in IB World Schools. AP for US-bound learners. MAUKQ’s simulations are mapped to all of them — the same lab, the same mission, surfaced under whichever standard your school teaches.
Curriculums supported
CAPS
Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement
The standard South African public-school curriculum, mandated by the Department of Basic Education. Grades R–12. Sets out exactly what must be taught and assessed each term.
Coverage: Natural Sciences (Gr 7–9), Technology (Gr 7–9), Physical Sciences (Gr 10–12), Life Sciences (Gr 10–12), Mathematics (Gr 4–12), Geography, EGD, IT, CAT.
↳ ~24,000 public schools
IEB
Independent Examinations Board
The most widely-used private-school exit qualification in South Africa. Same broad subject scope as CAPS but with deeper assessment standards and more rigorous matric papers.
Coverage: Same subject taxonomy as CAPS for STEM. We map every IEB Subject Assessment Standard back to the same simulation library.
↳ ~270 IEB schools
Cambridge
Cambridge Assessment International Education
IGCSE, AS, and A-Level. Used by international schools, many private schools, and a growing number of online schools serving South Africa. UK-anchored standards.
Coverage: IGCSE Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Combined Science, Mathematics, Computer Science. AS/A-Level: same plus Further Maths.
↳ ~150 SA schools (incl. online)
IB
International Baccalaureate
PYP (Primary Years), MYP (Middle Years), and DP (Diploma). Used by international schools across South Africa. Inquiry-led; concept-based; assessment via internal + external moderation.
Coverage: MYP Sciences (integrated), MYP Mathematics, MYP Design. DP Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Computer Science, Design Technology.
↳ ~25 IB World Schools in SA
AP
Advanced Placement (College Board)
US-anchored advanced courses, used by a small but growing number of South African private schools targeting US university applications.
Coverage: AP Physics 1 / 2 / C, AP Chemistry, AP Biology, AP Calculus AB / BC, AP Computer Science.
↳ ~12 SA schools
How it works
One simulation. Mapped to every curriculum that teaches it.
The physics of a hydroelectric dam doesn’t change between curriculums. The standards do. So we tag every simulation with every relevant code, every term placement, every assessment hook — and surface only what the teacher’s school actually uses.
Coverage by phase
Where MAUKQ is live, and where it’s next.
Foundation Phase
Grades R–3
Pre-formal STEM. We do not currently build for this band — learners are still acquiring literacy and numeracy.
Out of scopeIntermediate Phase
Grades 4–6
CAPS Natural Sciences & Technology, Mathematics. IEB equivalents. Cambridge Lower Primary. IB PYP.
In planningSenior Phase
Grades 7–9
CAPS Natural Sciences (4 strands) + Technology. IEB Senior Phase Sciences. Cambridge Lower Secondary. IB MYP.
Live nowFET Phase
Grades 10–12
Subject specialisation: Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Mathematics, EGD, IT, CAT (CAPS/IEB). Cambridge IGCSE / AS / A-Level. IB DP. AP.
In progressSenior Phase strands
The four CAPS Natural Sciences strands.
CAPS organises Gr 7–9 science into four strands. IEB, Cambridge Lower Secondary, and IB MYP cover the same content under different headings — we map across all of them.
Life & Living
0 simsCells to ecosystems. Photosynthesis, respiration, biodiversity, the human body.
Matter & Materials
3 simsAtoms, elements, mixtures, reactions. The chemistry of the world around you.
Energy & Change
3 simsForces, electricity, magnetism, heat. How energy moves through systems.
Earth & Beyond
1 simGeology, weather, climate, the solar system. The biggest picture there is.
Technology Process
1 simInvestigate, Design, Make, Evaluate, Communicate. Engineering as discipline.
